Stress – The Silent Killer
Mar 12th, 2008 by Veron
There are many diseases now that have been named the ‘silent killer’. Disease is the long term effect of stress on the body. Hypertension, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke and heart disease are just some of the more notable ones.
Yes, stress is a silent killer. It has been shown that 80% of all diseases have their origins in stress. This is because prolonged exposure to stress can lower the body’s immune system, metabolism and other body systems. Thus, when the body is stressed, it is not able to fight illness and disease, thereby causing the body to be susceptible to illnesses.
Types of Stress
When you are stressed, your body releases stress hormones. There are basically two types of stress:- short-term stress and long-term stress.
Short-term or acute stress is also known as the flight or fight reaction where the brain produces chemicals that tell the body to speed up, making it perform more effectively. Stress can be both positive or negative. Experiencing a promotion at work or getting married are examples of positive stress.
Although chronic or long-term stress can be triggered by the same type of stressors as acute stress, this type of stress can cause physical problems. Chronic stress occurs when we can’t, or won’t, let go of stress. This will be the start of many problems.
