Napoleon Hill Think And Grow Rich Summary Chapter 2
Oct 25th, 2011 by Veron
Continuing with Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich summary of chapter 2, I am even more convinced that if I can master the burning desire that Napoleon talks about, I am definitely able to bring about much more success in my life.
After the first chapter, I had indicated that I had made 3 appointments for my relationship marketing tool business over a period of 4 days, much more than I had in 4 months! I had only read the first chapter and taken action. That is the start of my journey and looking forward to many more successes to come.
The second chapter of Think and Grow Rich emphasizes the importance of having a consuming obsession of what you desire. The need to have a definite goal in mind, focusing all your energy, will power and determination of attaining that cherished goal is of utmost importance.
Burning desire to win
Even though you may be presented with not a single ray of hope, as long as you maintain a ‘Burning Desire To Win’ state of mind whilst holding on to the fire of hope, faith, courage and tolerance as well as be willing to burn your ships and all sources of retreat, the Universe can and does present it to you on a silver platter when you are ready for it.
This was very apparent when Napoleon narrated the story of his son, Blair, who was born without any physical sign of ears and without any natural equipment for hearing. With no way of conveying sound to the brain without the aid of ears, Blair was destined to be disfigured and remain a deaf mute for life. Even the doctor admitted that Blair might be deaf and mute for life!
Unfailing faith
However, Napoleon refused to accept that fact and had a burning desire that his son would not remain a deaf mute. This burning desire kept him looking for various ways and means of conveying sound to Blair without the aid of ears. In Napoleon’s mind, there was unfailing faith that his son would hear and speak.
Going by his quote “Our only limitations are those we set up in our own minds”, Napoleon went about filling Blair’s mind so completely with a burning desire backed by faith to hear, speak and be normal so much so that Nature would translate it into a physical reality. Napoleon went about by planting in Blair’s mind that his affliction as not a liability but rather an asset of great value.
Napoleon himself admitted that he had no idea how the affliction could ever become an asset. Realizing the Blair could hear when he spoke with his lips at the base of Blair’s brain, Napoleon continued to push reason aside and on a daily basis, shared inspiring bedtime stories designed to develop in Blair self-reliance, imagination and a keen desire to hear and be normal.
By refusing to accept Nature’s error, and by persistent desire, it seemed as if a stroke of magic occurred when Blair was given an electrical hearing device to test and voila! he could hear for the very first time!!!
This was simply amazing! Blair soon went to work for the company and started teaching other deaf mutes to hear and to speak. The liability had indeed turned into an asset.
Here are the 3 key steps that brought about the miracle:-
- Napoleon planted the desire to hear and speak as any normal person in Blair’s mind. At the same time, Napoleon also planted the desire to convert his greatest handicap into his greatest asset. Both the desires had become reality.
- Napoleon communicated his burning desire to Blair in every way conceivable over the years and never gave up.
- Blair had faith in his father and believed every word Napoleon said without any doubt.
In summary, the burning desire must exist and you must have faith and believe that you will achieve what you so desire.

Hi Veronica,
Great article! I’ve been meaning to pick up this book for a while. Have you heard of Enchantment? It’s a great new book by Guy Kawasaki. Same idea, modernized.
Keep up the great work.
